![]() That is essentially what he does almost halfway through “The Fifth Element” when he finally introduces Diva Plavalaguna. And yet, the director strikes a balance with these two opposing sentiments so that we never doubt his presence as a potent antagonist the hero Leon. In fact, you start to wonder just how far Besson might push that comic aspect at times. Meanwhile, Norman is a murderous villain who still gives us a few laughs due to his pathetic nature. Besson pushes the subject a bit to shock the audience, but never far enough that we stop believing the character altogether. We sympathize with Mathilda’s plight and yet she scares us out a bit with her subdued infatuation with Leon. ![]() One of my favorite examples has to be in “Leon the Professional” where its characters, particularly the precocious 12-year-old Mathilda Lando and Norman Stansfield, are both familiar and off-putting at the same time. It’s an odd balance that he strikes so beautifully in all his work. We always feel that his most outrageous moments are not so outlandish. And yet we always feel that he’s retaining a certain level of conservative cinematic structure in his movies. Just when you think you might have his intentions pinned down because he’s given you something rather traditional, he throws a curveball that turns expectations on their head. The director, whether working on an animated film, a suspense thriller, or a sci-fi classic, always manages to keep the viewer shocked and comfortable at the same time. ![]() Luc Besson’s films are strange and yet familiar. This week’s installment features Luc Besson’s “ The Fifth Element.” We will select a section or a film in its entirety, highlighting the impact that utilizing the operatic form or sections from an opera can alter our perception of a film that we are viewing. “Opera Meets Film” is a feature dedicated to exploring the way that opera has been employed in cinema. The basket is fully removable and snaps into the lid of the filter for easy and drip-free transit to a sink or hose for cleaning. This cuts down on maintenance and makes the filter suitable for a wide range of environments. The self-cleaning, non-corrosive impeller suited for both saltwater and freshwater environments. This also means that filter will restart itself with no trouble after a power outage or after maintenance. Self-priming pump means there is no need to fill the filter basket with water, start a siphon, monitor the filter, or any of the other headaches of starting a new filter.A leveler on the base of the filter lets the filter adjust to a variety of aquarium styles. The filter basket has a huge capacity to hold filtration media of your choice in the configuration of your choice (No cartridges).Water recirculates within the filter, so turning the flow rate down will not wear the pump down or cause problems within the filter. The flow on the pump is adjustable using the dial on the front, from the powerful full flow rate of 450 gallons per hour on the Tidal 110 down to a gentle 90 gallons per hour on the same filter.A dial on the side of the filter adjusts how much flow comes from the underwater intake versus the surface skimmer. The surface skimmer will capture the water from just below the surface, where excreted fish oils accumulate, and deeper in the tank removing floating debris. The adjustable telescoping intake allows water to be taken from any level of the tank without the need to stop the filter or bother with spare parts.A heater can be attached to the side with an optional heater clip, allowing for better dispersal of heated water through the aquarium. The basket is designed with raised slots which catch detritus rather than allowing it to fall through back into the filter when flow is stopped. When this happens, the redirected water pushes up the blue maintenance monitor on the top of the filter, letting the aquarium keeper know that the filter media needs to be cleaned out. When this happens in the Tidal Filter, water is redirected around the filter and back into the aquarium through an outlet to the side. Over time, filtration media can become clogged with detritus and prevent water from flowing through. ![]() ![]() The pump is also insulated and silent, making it excellent for office or dining room aquariums, and has extremely low power consumption for the amount of output – the large Tidal 110 filter uses only 12 watts.A bottom-to-top flow ensures that water comes into contact will all filter media, and cannot go around or over filter media as with hang on back filters with a back-to-front flow. The pump pushes water up into the basket of the filter, entering through the bottom of the basket and being pushed out the top.Ventilation slots in the lid of the filter and aeration grooves in the outflow ensure that water returned to the tank is fully oxygenated and maximize gas exchange during filtration. Make sure it’s memorable but not easily guessable. That’s the password you need to type each time you log into RoboForm. Start by protecting your account with a strong master password. If that account was hacked, they would get access to everything! It may sound counter-intuitive, but I believe that by using reasonable security measures, password managers are the safest places to store them. RoboForm will securely store your passwords on the cloud, sync them to all your devices, and fill them in automatically.īut surely keeping all of your passwords in the same cloud account is less secure. How do you remember a hundred passwords? Keep them simple? Make them all the same? Scribble them on a piece of paper? Wrong answer! Don’t remember them at all-use a password manager instead. In each subsection, I’ll explore what the app offers and then share my personal take. RoboForm is all about saving time by having forms and passwords filled in automatically, and I’ll list its features in the following eight sections. Read on to discover if RoboForm is the right password manager for you. If you’re doing the same, I hope this review will change your mind. While a number of my family members are tech-savvy and use password managers, others have been using the same simple password for decades, hoping for the best. I was looking forward to testing RoboForm again to see how it has evolved over the years, so I installed the 30-day free trial on my iMac and thoroughly tested it over several days. But it doesn’t have all of the features of its competitors, and I’m keen to evaluate the options as I write this series of reviews. It integrates well with macOS and iOS, suggests and automatically fills in passwords (both for websites and applications), and warns me when I have used the same password on multiple sites. Over the last few years, I’ve been using Apple’s iCloud Keychain instead. So when I left that job, there were no concerns about who I might share the passwords. The company I worked for standardized on it and my managers were able to give me access to web services without letting me know the passwords, and remove access when I no longer needed it. In 2009, I started using LastPass’s free plan for my personal logins. ![]() But I wasn’t ready to make a commitment to using a password manager and form-filler at the time. I vaguely remember trying RoboForm well before that, when it first came out nearly 20 years ago. ![]() My name is Adrian Try, and password managers have been making my life easy for over a decade. What I Don’t Like: Free plan is for a single device only. ![]() Discover for yourself which one best meets your needs. Make use of the 30-day free trial period to see if it meets your needs, and compare it to other password managers that appeal to you. RoboForm is a good middle ground with a proven track record and an army of faithful users. But you will pay significantly more for them. They offer more security options, like requiring a password to be typed before logging into a site, and will scan the dark web to warn you if hackers have managed to get hold of any of your email addresses or passwords. If you’d rather spend some money to gain features (and financially support the developers who make the software) consider 1Password, Dashlane, LastPass, and Sticky Password. It too offers all the features most people need and will sync an unlimited number of passwords onto all of your devices, and is the best option for users who prioritize a low price. That’s compelling, but weigh that up against LastPass’s free plan. It offers all the features that most people need in a fairly easy-to-use package. RoboForm is more affordable than most of the competition. I bought the studio version, because I truly see the value in BlackMagic. I've personally had a 95% flawless experience with all the tools inside the app, although I'm still not a huge fan of Fusion vs After Effects. Sure there is bug reports, every piece of software has them, and there's also the fact that a lot of people don't update their graphic drivers, or even provide good logs. The fact that they update so often, is remarkable (heck even yesterday they just dropped ANOTHER update). It's NLE abilities are great now, and I'm able to edit way faster in this vs everything else I've tried (Hitfilm, FCPX and PP - which l still own/pay for monthly but don't use since going all in on DR) I've completed documentaries, youtube videos and music videos without any issues. I can't tell if they're uneducated or trollsĭR16 has been so smooth vs Premiere Pro. I have no idea why it's getting so much hate on here vs everywhere else online. well, if you don't need the additional effects and codec's of the Studio version you can't get much cheaper than FREE! If I include and still images in a project then I may have LR and PS open as well and I still enjoy smooth playback.Īs to Value for Money. I edit mostly 4K footage and downsample to 1080p for output. I currently use a 2017 iMac 3.4 GHz i5 with a 1TB Fusion drive and 48Gb RAM which (apart from the RAM) is nothing special. ![]() One common issue is using an external SSD as the scratch disk, if it does not respond instantaneously it can cause a crash. I have had a few crashes, but upon investigation it is usually related to hardware rather than the software itself. It can be intimidating for a beginner and there are so many hidden features that I am sure even experts get confused sometimes. So far, and I've been using DaVinci Resolve since Ver.14, I find it amazing. Since I retired about 15 years ago I have continued to use NLE's as a hobby and am familiar with most common versions, except Adobe's PP, I just never liked it but that's just my personal taste. I can't understand the negative comment, It works great for me! True I am NOT a beginner, in fact as a retired electronics engineer I have been around Video Editors since they we nothing more than 2 beta cam players and a beta cam recorder doing cut edits with 5 second pre-roll just to get the tapes in sync. Da Vinci Resolve is one the top of these. I've used several of the commercial personal video editors. Not to slow on my Intel I7, 32 GB Ram 1TB SSDĪnd no major bugs. Advanced repeatable programmable workflow. For my normal use it really do the job (nature video editing).Īdvanced colour grading and exposure adjustments. ![]() Time and speed changes in your project are limited and some effects and transitions a not available in the free version (and probably other limitations I didn't discover yet).īut you get a very useful program. You can edit and export at the resolutions up to UHD. On the free version there are a few minor limitations. I've not yet tried the special editing keyboard. But different because of all the features. So no worse than other commercial programs. I don't think I could give any other video editor program a better rating in Ease of use. A little steep learning curve but that's because it's got a lot of possibilities and some very advanced ones to. ![]() One of the best video editors you can get for personal use. ![]() I've been using DaVinci Resolve for about half a year. "False warnings or blockages when visiting websites" did not occur in the entire test of enterprise security software when visiting 7,000 websites. ![]() Yet all other products as well only had a low rate of false positives compared to the volume of test data. Throughout a period of 14 months, the solutions from Sophos, Intel Security and Bitdefender showed an overall error rate of under 10. However, they only took part in 6 out of 7 test rounds. Only the two Kaspersky solutions Endpoint Security and Small Office Security remained error-free in the tests. Enterprise software: only Kaspersky did an error-free jobĪlso on the test of 14 security solutions for corporate users in terms of usability, nearly all the products indicated that they hardly make any errors in the friend or foe detection. The Comodo Internet Security Premium blocked 29 times. While 7 solutions did not falsely block anything, 11 of the security packages did so for 1 to 6 innocuous applications. Even here, most of the 19 programs did a good job. "False blockages of certain actions carried out while installing and using legitimate software". Only the suite from K7 Computing issued a total of 10 false warnings. 6 solutions indicated only 1 to 3 false warnings in 280 tests. 11 out of 19 applications did not trigger any false alarms. "False warnings concerning certain actions carried out while installing and using legitimate software". That is a quota of 0.001% – acceptable value, even if there is room for improvement. The worst score from Ahnlab V3 Internet Security involved 98 false positive files for 7.7 million test cases. "False detections of legitimate software as malware during a system scan". "False warnings or blockages when visiting websites" did not occur at all throughout the entire test when visiting 7,000 websites. But even the security packages at the bottom of the list did not deliver any dramatic results in the endurance test on the contrary. This was followed by applications with fewer than 10 false positives in the endurance test, Intel Security, Bitdefender, AVG and Microsoft. Avira AntiVirus Pro and Kaspersky Internet Security performed error-free. Consumer user software: some work perfectlyĭespite the high standards in the test, involving large volumes of data, some applications manage to get through without triggering a single false alarm. That is why the latest versions of these important files are always included in the tests. If security software classified a new system file from Windows as false, that would have fatal repercussions. ![]() The set of 7.7 million test files naturally contained all new files from popular programs, such as Windows 7 to 10 and Office. In addition, 280 applications were launched twice and it was noted whether a false alarm was indicated, or whether the application was even blocked. The lab fully met this standard:įor each individual solution, over a period of 14 months, some 7,000 websites were visited and 7.7 million files put to the test. ![]() In order to obtain a truly relevant test result in terms of false positives, it is necessary to have a large number of benign test data. If that is not the case, the file is tagged and categorized as good or bad. If a program does not immediately recognize a file, it queries the cloud whether that file is already registered. That's why all solutions work with so-called whitelist databases, in which all clean and benign files are stored with fingerprints and hash values. After all, the existing number of clean files and applications in the IT world is more clearly defined than those infected. In all test categories, only benign websites, clean files or innocuous known applications were evaluated. False blockages of certain actions carried out while installing and using legitimate software Here is how the test worked False warnings concerning certain actions carried out while installing and using legitimate software False detections of legitimate software as malware during a system scan False warnings or blockages when visiting websites The testers specified four test items for the "Usability" test, which is "lab speak" as formulated by the engineers in their logs: In total, 19 packages for private users and 14 solutions for corporate users were tested. That is why the AV-TEST laboratory spent 14 months – from January 2015 to February 2016 – testing how well security solutions handle this issue. Free choice of the editor is nice (especially since the Praat script editor is pretty simple) but much more important is the freedom to edit everything in a Praat script: But it is possible for example to adjust some parameters in a script that was mailed to your smartphone and send it back. You don't even need Praat to edit Praat scripts! Usually, that's a bad idea because you want to test your scripts frequently during development and of course you need Praat to run scripts. The Praat script editor obviously is the first choice to handle Praat scripts but principally you can use any text editor you like for editing. First, because Praat scripts are plain text files. ![]() Flexible macrosīut Praat scripts are much more versatile than simple macros. Praat also provides you with a macro recording mechanism (the command history which is introduced in Session 1), accessible within the Praat script editor (also introduced in Session 1). You can save the script for later use or to distribute it among your students or colleagues (to make their lives easier or to make sure that they perform an analysis exactly the same way as you intended). You can collect any amount of Praat GUI actions in a Praat script and replay them as often as you like. The benefit of macros is threefold: recurring tasks become less tedious, much faster and more reliable. you don't need to worry about typos or missed clicks during later iterations. So, with a macro you can automate a complex task and rerun it reliably, i.e. If you replay the macro, each recorded action is executed one after the other in the order you recorded them. GUI actions are actions you perform in the graphical user interface of an application, like pointing and clicking with the mouse or pressing keys on the keyboard. text processors, Photoshop etc.) allows you to record a series of GUI actions and to replay them as often as needed. An application that supports macros (e.g. We'll come back to this issue as soon as our scripts grow and include loops and other fancy stuff. What is a Praat script? One starting point is to think of Praat scripts as macros. Indent lines within loops, conditionals, and similar blocks (forms, procedures etc.).Separate code blocks (sequences of statements dedicated to the same subtask) with empty lines (and consider introducing them with a comment).I recommend you commit yourself to two rules right at the beginning of your scripting career to make your scripts better (not only look better): Praat allows generous usage of whitespace: We can insert empty lines everywhere we want and we can indent lines with spaces or tabs whenever we want. Whitespace is applied in order to visually reflect the structure of scripts. Another great tool complementing comments to achieve better readability is whitespace. Readability of scriptsĬomments are a great tool to improve readability of scripts (for humans). Delete the hash to listen to the tone again. Now the tone is opened immediately after creation. Leading whitespace (space/tab) in front of the hash symbol is allowed, but nothing else.Ĭreate Sound as pure tone "tone", 1, 0, 0.4, 44100, 440, 0.2, 0.01, 0.01 To function like this, the hash symbol must be the first symbol in that line. Lines starting with the hash symbol are not executed when you run the script, they are just ignored and execution is continued in the next line. The comment indicator in Praat scripts is the hash (#) symbol. That's a very common and useful practice during the testing/debugging of scripts. Reactivation is just a matter of deleting the comment indicator. This allows us to deactivate statements without deleting them. This is best done as a comment section at the beginning of the script.Īnother more practical benefit of comments is the possibility to comment out statements. If you distribute your scripts among your colleagues or offer them for download it's imperative to include at least some usage information and requirements. That's the moment when you'll be grateful for any comment that tells you what the script actually does. ![]() ![]() More often than not you'll ask yourself what a given line or sequence of lines contributes to the script. This could be useful for yourself if you revisit a script you coded months ago and try to adapt it to your current task. So, what's the benefit of comments? First, with comments you can explain your script. Comments are lines which are ignored during the execution of the script. Syntactic Structure Comments & WhitespaceĪs any other scripting/programming language the Praat scripting language allows comments. ![]() It also removes dust and gives shine to the floors, so there’s no need for water afterward.
